There are four petrol and two diesel engines to choose from. The entry-level 1.8-litre Kompressor comes in two power outputs – 143bhp (CLC 180K) and 184bhp (CLC 200K). Both are lively and quick off the mark. The 2.1-litre diesel units are greener than before and still punchy. The 150bhp CLC 220 CDI records a 0-62mph sprint time of under ten seconds.

The top of the range CLC 350 is paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission as standard (also optional on CLC 230). It races from 0-62mph in just 6.3 seconds, up to an electronically-limited top-speed of 155mph. All models, apart from the CLC 350, come with a six-speed manual gearbox with the option of a five-speed auto. The automatic gearchange is smooth but the gearbox saps power a little.

The CLC is enjoyable to drive and handles responsively. Unfortunately it’s lest down by the rather wooden steering which lacks feedback, although the coupe glides along the motorway without noticeable road or engine noise. Sport models boast extra agility and speed-sensitive steering – for added precision, confident cornering and easier low-speed manoeuvrability.

They’re certainly worth choosing if you value driver enjoyment.
