Pros & cons
Elegant and understated style, superb performance, wonderful engine sound
Not as driver focussed as some high performance four-door alternatives
Mercedes-Benz CLS AMG (05-10) rivals
Overview
The stylish CLS four-door ‘coupe’ was ripe for the AMG treatment and it’s sleek looks suit the high performance extras perfectly. It goes as well as it looks too with stunning performance and a 0-62mph time of less than five seconds. It was initially available with a supercharged 5.4-litre V8, but in July 2006 a more powerful 6.2-litre engine with 514bhp was introduced.
Besides its hand-built engine, the AMG version of the CLS comes with specially tuned brakes, stability control, suspension, plus AMG sports seats. It’s undoubtedly rapid, refined and desirable, but sadly not quite as driver-focussed as other high performance cars of a similar size.
