The R-Class hasn’t been crash-tested by Euro NCAP, but given the performance of recent Mercedes-Benz models, along with the amount of on-board kit, it is difficult to see how it could be anything less than a five-star car. Every model gets six airbags (dual front, side and curtain), all-round three-point seatbelts and Isofix child seat mounting points.

The front seats also benefit from a system called NECK-PRO, which is designed to help prevent whiplash injuries. Another unique feature to Mercedes-Benz is PRE-SAFE, which links up the brake assist and electronic stability programme and tensions the seatbelts, adjusts the driver’s seat position and closes the sunroof in preparation for an imminent collision.

If the two rear seats aren’t in use, then you’ll find R-Class’ main party trick appealing. The two back seats fold into the floor, revealing enough room for the luggage of the four passengers. Fold down all four rear seats and the load area is practical enough for the weekend jobs that every family has. In the cabin there’s a large glovebox and centre console cubbies as well as some large cupholders in the rear.

Models from October 2009 can accommodate five adults and their luggage with 869 litres of boot space in the standard wheelbase models and more than 1,000 litres in long wheelbase models. Five-seat models have an additional storage compartment under the boot floor that adds 75-litres of space.
