Should you buy a used first-generation MINI Hatchback (R50)

Yes. As long as it’s big enough to meet your needs, it’s a great little car, excellent value as long as you don’t buy the very cheapest and end up with a broken gearbox to deal with, and still looks great on the road. It handles well too, with a responsive, fun nature that captures the spirit of the original Mini without the unrefined, compromised reality.

Choose a MINI One for lowest costs overall, but the Cooper is the style icon and just as easy to run. With 115hp in a small, squat three-door hatchback there’s another legend it recalls, the original Golf GTI. You can see why so many remain on the market and enjoyed by owners.

The main issue is the weak original gearbox, but as the cars age we’d tackle that head on – buy the best trim, colour and spec, plan your budget for a new clutch and reconditioned gearbox, and view it as a long-term investment in a future classic. But don’t forget to get out and enjoy it as well.

What we like

Robust 1.6-litre engine, elegant retro style, bright colours and high-quality trim and design, comfortable front seats.

What we don’t like

Dismal diesel, the chattering sound of a gearbox about to expire, the temptation to buy a Cooper S instead
