Should you buy a Peugeot 208 Mk1?

The 208 is stylish, reasonably priced, fairly practical and good to drive. It’s not the most reliable car out there and buyers should be aware of the faults.

They’re approaching the bottom of their depreciation curves too. Although most of the recalls were for early cars (first two years or so) so if you can afford it go for a later car, you should as these are better engineered.

The diesels look great on paper, but you should only buy one if you regularly traipse up and down the country’s motorways. We like the 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre engines. They’re not the quickest but they’re economical on short journeys and cheap to tax too.

There are a tonne of different trim levels to choose from, all of which are pretty good. Access is the cheapest and comes with barely anything. These models offer a bit of a false economy because on the used market there’s not too much of a price disparity between these models and better equipped cars such as the Active.

The 208 GTi by Peugeot Sport is one of the best hot hatchbacks for less than £10,000. These late model cars come with a differential which can send power to the wheel with the most traction. It makes a huge difference – they’re an absolute riot.
