Driver and passenger airbags are standard on all models, but ABS was only fitted on GLX upwards until March 1998, when it became standard on LX. L models got ABS in 1999. A 1997 model scored two stars (out of four) in Euro NCAP tests, a re-test in 2001 gave the revised model three stars (out of five). The effective but occasionally awkward PSA keypad immobiliser system will deter drive-away villains.
Strong deadlocks back this up.
406 swallows family luggage, with a big boot in the saloon (the load area in the estate is huge and even the coupé has good storage space for its class).
