Porsche Boxster (12-16) - rated 5 out of 5

When the first Porsche Boxster arrived on the market in 1996, it represented a major departure for the German sports car manufacturer. Not only was it the firm’s first purpose-designed roadster for over 40 years, it was the car which is considered to have saved Porsche from financial ruin.

That first model shared much of its underpinnings, frontal bodywork and interior with the larger 911 series, but instead of the engine being located at the back, for the Boxster it was positioned in the middle, just behind the two-seater cabin.

It’s a different approach to its primary rivals such as the Audi TT Roadster, BMW Z4 and Mercedes-Benz SLK, all of which have their engines up front.
