Renault Megane Coupe: Coupe alternatives

To make it more than simply a three-door version of the hatchback, Renault has added the 'Coupe' name to the sportier Megane. And this puts it into a slightly different category. It's not truly a coupe in the traditional sense, but it does mean it competes with a wider range of models than a standard three-door hatch. I've picked out three alternatives I'd consider if I was buying, each of which offers something slightly different.

The Scirocco name was resurrected in 2008 and this new model, based on the Golf, is a superbly enjoyable car to drive, even with the smaller engines. It looks great too with a bold style not usually associated with Volkswagen. For a few hundred pounds more than our Megane Coupe you could get a 1.4 TSI 160bhp, although it's not as well equipped.

Thanks to an impressive reliability record, superb build quality and truly unique styling, the Honda Civic is one of our favourite family hatches. Indeed, we previously ran a Civic for six months. The three door version is pretty much identical to the five-door with the same daring design. Fitted with the excellent 2.2 i-CTDi engine and in GT trim, the Honda will set you back £19,952, plus it's generously kitted out.

Another car we previously ran for six months, the SEAT Leon is a standard five-door hatch that manages to look similar to a sporty coupe, helped by the concealed rear door handles. The FR is the hot hatch version (although there's a more extreme Cupra available) which gets you a more agressive look and larger alloy wheels. It's available with the same petrol engine as the latest Volkswagen Golf GTI or alternatively there's the excellent 2.0 TDI with 170bhp. The latter will set you back £19,500.

The verdict?

So out of the four which would I choose? It would have to be the SEAT Leon FR. It's such good value for money compared to the others and offers impressive performance and outstanding economy of 53mpg. Not only that but it's also great looking, practical and reliable.
