The Renault Megane is rather starting to show its age and as such is becoming difficult to recommend against newer hatchbacks that are significantly better to drive and to sit in.

If all you’re after is a relatively inexpensive plug-in hybrid, the Megane E-Tech doesn’t do a bad job – it undercuts most of its competition and offers low running costs. But the unrefined nature of that hybrid powertrain means we’d much rather spend the extra cash on something more sophisticated, like a SEAT Leon eHybrid.

For a family hatchback, the lack of safety tech is a bit of a kick in the teeth, too – and with only mediocre practicality it’s a hard sell to family buyers who’ll need to accommodate children and their paraphernalia.

The Megane RS is something of a flawed diamond, and you’ll really need a test drive to see if its firm chassis works for you. If it does, you’re unlikely to be disappointed by the performance and handling on offer.
