Fuel economy

A more stringent standard for fuel economy (WLTP) was introduced from September 2017, and this model was not required to undergo that test. Its fuel economy measured under the previous test system was 33 - 60 mpg. However these figures are less likely to be achievable in real world driving and so should never be compared to another car's mpg which was measured under the newer, more realistic WLTP system.

Most running expenses are reasonable with decent economy from frugal diesels and low insurance keeping costs low. It’s cheap to buy but re-sale values aren’t brilliant for Megane generally and saloons aren’t very popular in the UK.

The Megane is a good choice for eco-friendly buyers. With an average of 160g/km CO2 across the model line-up, its emissions are relatively low for a small family saloon. Eco-conscious buyers should consider the 1.5-litre diesel, which is one of the greenest models in the range. The range is impressively frugal, averaging 46 mpg.

Early models were very prone to problems. Squealing brakes, water leaks, loose trim, loss of power and gear selection were just a few. More recent cars seem to be better built and complaints are decreasing. Interior fit and finish saw an improvement from 2006 too.
