Long before the current generation of small crossovers based on superminis being fashionable it was superminis morphing into people carriers that was the on-key trend of the moment. And the Renault Modus, launched in 2004 is a key example – augmented by the Nissan Note and Honda Jazz.

Truth be told both its rivals were more practical than the Renault, which is why the Modus didn’t survive past 2012 and its Japanese rivals are still available, though the Clio-based Modus did have more room for rear passengers. The rear bench can slide forward and backwards to maximise boot space or legroom, though in this mode the Renault can only cope with 198 litres of luggage.
