While at first glance the Saab 9-5 had all the credentials to take on the likes of the Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series, it was hamstrung by its uncompetitive underpinnings.

First appearing as a four-door saloon in 1997, the first Saab 9-5 replaced the 9000CD – its hatchback counterpart, the 9000CS continued for another year. It looked elegant, if not ground breaking, was powered by a range of powerful 2- and 2.3-litre engines, as well as a 3-litre V6 for a short while, but its underpinnings were an updated version of those found under the first generation of Vauxhall Vectra

While the 9-5 saloon had a number of Saab-like touches, like the ignition key located near the gear lever, it was the capacious 9-5 estate that buyers embraced more warmly when sales began in 1999.
