SsangYong Rexton SUV: will my Isofix child seats fit?

The SsangYong Rexton has a good array of standard safety and driver assistance kit on board, with more available as you climb the three rungs of the trim ladder. The firm is expecting to score a solid four stars during forthcoming Euro NCAP crash testing.

All cars get the following:

Moving up to ELX then nets you:

  • Side airbags for rear passengers
  • Driver’s knee airbag
  • Rear-view camera

At top spec Ultimate you can expect:

All of the equipment we’ve tested so far works well except the reversing camera, which on initial test in Korea had a delay that meant in reality we were far closer to the object behind the car than it looked on the screen. The acoustic parking sensors work perfectly, but if you’re someone who mainly relies on the screen you may have a few bumps before you get used to it.

Adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist are conspicuous by their absence here too, which seems a little out of kilter with the otherwise comprehensive suite of safety systems on the Rexton.

  • Seven seats available on some models
  • At its best as a five-seater, though
  • Parking made easier with tech

While seven seats are available on base-spec EX cars, it’s optional on ELX and unavailable on Ultimate models. That tells you all you need to know about the Rexton’s ability to carry more than five – it’s for short distances only.

It's not too difficult to get into the back seats, but taller passengers will find their heads touching the roof and with very little space to put their feet. Add to that the small rear windows and it can be a claustrophobic place for some. However, if it's just for occasional use by children, they're more than adequate and quite comfortable.

Space in the middle row is generous, though, with plenty of head and legroom and an almost-flat floor across the width of the car, so those in the middle seat won't feel like they've drawn the short straw.

This is a car at its best with five seats and a large boot area. If you need to carry more, investigate the SsangYong Turismo instead.

SsangYong Rexton SUV: will it fit my garage?

This is a large, tall car and as such isn’t the easiest to park in tight spaces, mainly because it won't fit in small spaces.

However, the front and rear parking sensors do a lot to help here, and there’s a 360-degree bird’s-eye view display on top-spec models that makes life even easier still – although we found this had a delay which could cause problems. Drivers have good visibility all around the car too and the front end has a relatively short overhang.

And thanks to almost flat sides, it's easier to judge than you might anticipate at first and sitting up as high as you do means visibility is a strong point.

SsangYong Rexton SUV: will my luggage fit?

In five-seat mode the Rexton is very practical indeed because those cars get useful touches such as a split-level boot floor, grocery hooks in the boot for your shopping bags and a couple of cubbies at the side of the load area. There's a huge amount of space, and top-spec models come with a powered tailgate to aid access, although it's quite slow in action and taller people may find it easy to knock their head when the bootlid is open.

If you go for a seven-seat Rexton, the boot space with all seats in place is quite small - there's only room for a couple of weekend bags - so you might need to invest in a roofbox for any large family holidays with a fully-loaded car.
