The Legacy saloon hasn’t been crash tested by Euro NCAP yet but the previous generation Outback (which is effectively an off road version of the Legacy) was awarded four stars for adult safety and this car should perform as good if not better. In addition to the surefooted handling, the Legacy offers all the usual safety equipment including six airbags.

Security equipment ticks the usual boxes too with remote central locking and a Thatcham approved alarm and immobiliser. The 3.0R Spec B models with automatic gearboxes also get an electronic stability control system.

With 433 litres of boot space, the Legacy is useful for carrying luggage. It offers more space than a Peugeot 407 for example and the opening is wide, giving good access. On the downside, the rear seats do not fold down for longer items, limiting versatility. If you need maximum practicality then go for the Sports Tourer (estate) or Outback body shapes.

Stowage up front is good with decent door pockets, two separate cupholders in the central console and a deep cubby box between the front seats.
