Fuel economy

A more stringent standard for fuel economy (WLTP) was introduced from September 2017, and this model was not required to undergo that test. Its fuel economy measured under the previous test system was 31 mpg. However these figures are less likely to be achievable in real world driving and so should never be compared to another car's mpg which was measured under the newer, more realistic WLTP system.

Not a cheap car to buy, although servicing and spares are only marginally more than the Celica. There are plenty of good independents around who will service it cheaply. Group 16 insurance is on the high side and economy is 31 mpg overall. Used values have always been steady.

Like all other Toyotas, the MR-2 has been one of the most reliable models of its type. Since its 1990 launch, there have been no major quality, or breakdown problems. Check the owners’ reviews section of parkers.co.uk for confirmation. Very impressive for a car launched in 1990.
