The choice of a 1.0 or 1.2 litre petrol engines in the Agila differs from the Suzuki Wagon R+ (although a 1.2 has been available in the Suzuki from 2005), and the smaller yet more refined units are nippy around town but struggle at high speeds. The 1.0 12v feels underpowered due to the Agila’s relatively heavy body; the more powerful 1.2 16v unit is adequate, but it needs to be worked hard to give its best.

Also, due to the boxy, non-aerodynamic design, it can struggle in high winds or in adverse weather conditions.

The Agila has light handling and a tight turning circle, making it ideal for urban driving, although the sturdy, uncompromising body shape does feel a little clumsy and rolly around corners. Outclassed on the motorway, the Agila is out of it’s depth when taken out of the city, but competent if you keep to its strengths.
