The Vauxhall Astra VXR has not been subject to Euro NCAP testing. The GTC on which it is based, however, received the highest five-star rating. The Astra VXR comes with six airbags, ABS brakes and electronic stability control. Safety is further improved thanks to powerful Brembo brakes, a reinforced passenger safety cell, hydraulic brake fade assist, cornering brake control, electronic brake force distribution and emergency brake assistance.

A hill start assist system is also fitted, helping prevent the car accidentally rolling back. Potential owners should have no concerns about Vauxhall Astra VXR safety as a result.

Despite being a performance three-door hatchback the Vauxhall Astra VXR is moderately practical. There’s just about room for four adults and the boot offers 380 litres of storage space, which is more than the Volkswagen Scirocco. Fold the rear seats in the VXR and its luggage capacity rises to a substantial 1,165 litres. The only catch is that the Astra’s boot lip is high and of a slightly awkward shape, meaning bigger items can be difficult to lift into the rear of the car.

Inside there are numerous storage points, while a 12-volt socket allows electronic devices to be charged on the move. A 56-litre fuel tank means a range of around 400 miles, which should reduce the number of times you need to refuel on longer trips. There are cup holders in both the front and the rear, while rear passengers benefit from a folding centre armrest and individual headrests.
