Should you buy one?

There’s plenty to like about the Volkswagen Golf GTE – it’s a comfortable, spacious hatchback that can offer both low running costs and impressive performance.

For company car drivers it’s a real bargain, with all the performance and some of the prowess of the iconic GTI but at a significantly lower price. And it’s a great option for anybody who’s interested in an electric car and is able to charge at home, but perhaps only has the space or budget for one car.

Less prestigious plug-in hybrids do offer better value, however, even ones very closely related to the GTE. For instance, we’d rather opt for the larger Skoda Octavia iV vRS for its additional practicality alone.

Still, the Golf’s breadth of ability and desirable image mean that for the many buyers who’ll opt for it, it’s unlikely to be a disappointment. It’s also a worthy upgrade from its previous generation.
