XPENG G6 boot space, practicality and safety

2025 onwards (change model)
Practicality rating: 4.1 out of 54.1

  • Masses of rear passenger space
  • Boot isn’t the most useful, and there’s no frunk
  • Plenty of storage throughout

How much space is there?

If you want a spacious electric SUV, this Xpeng will tick lots of the right boxes. At 4.75m long, it’s not a small car, with almost dimensions to the Tesla Model Y – we weren’t lying when we said they are similar.

Just like the Tesla, the G6 gets a full-length glass roof as standard. Space in the front is generous though the centre console is quite high set and can sometimes make you feel a touch hemmed in. But those in the rear will have no complaints for space, with plenty of room to stretch out even with the front seats as far back as they go.

Passengers in the rear will have plenty of space to stretch out.

The rear seats also offer 12 levels of recline and the front seats can fold completely flat, with Xpeng designing the car so it could be quite comfortable to sleep in.

Xpeng G6 boot space and storage

The Xpeng G6’s boot measures 571 litres with the rear seats upright, expanding to 1,374 litres when folded – making it larger than a Renault Scenic E-Tech and Hyundai Ioniq 5, and competitive with the Tesla Model Y. The boot isn’t quite as useful a shape as the Tesla, however, and it doesn’t have the front boot, or ‘frunk’, which you get with the Model Y.

The G6’s boot isn’t as useful as that of a Tesla Model Y.

In terms of storage, the Model Y has plenty throughout its cabin, with a large open storage area beneath what would traditionally house a transmission tunnel. We do, however, prefer the more open-feeling storage of a Hyundai Ioniq 5, as the USB sockets aren’t the easiest to access. Not that you’ll probably need them, as two high-power wireless smartphone chargers sit below the touchscreen, with internal cooling so they don’t overheat.

Is it easy to park?

Generally speaking, yes, the Xpeng G6 is an easy car to park as you’re spoilt with all kinds of features to help make it easier. All-round parking sensors are included, along with a 360-degree camera system to help you see how close to a kerb you are, for example.

You’re always aware of the G6’s size, though, as it’s not a small car. If you also like to be more traditional and not rely on cameras, you’ll be disappointed by the poor rear visibility as a result of its narrow rear window. You do get a rear wiper at least, unlike the Tesla Model Y.

Safety

  • Generous standard safety kit
  • Five-star Euro NCAP safety rating
  • But some of the driver assists struggle in practise

The Xpeng G6 impressed when it was tested by Euro NCAP in September 2024, scoring the top five stars, with high ratings in the adult occupant (88%) and child occupant (85%) categories. The latter should be particularly important for those wanting a family car. On paper the Tesla Model Y scored higher still, though that was tested in 2022, and was subject to a slightly different method of testing to when the Xpeng was rated, and therefore direct comparisons shouldn’t be drawn.

The G6 also comes equipped with all manner of driver assistance features, including blind spot monitoring and an advanced adaptive cruise control system – one you’d be charged for if you were to buy a Volkswagen ID.4, for example.

The Xpeng G6 scored the top five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP.

In general, we were very impressed by the safety assists – and it’s one of the least obtrusive cars we’ve tried from China. Cars from this corner of the world are generally set up for highway driving and often have irritating bongs and alarms, and are usually difficult to turn off, but we can’t label the same complaint at the G6.
