Should you buy one?

Yes. The BMW M135i is competent, fast, great to own, and as good as all of its four-cylinder rivals. Grip levels are good and there’s an admirable lack of bodyroll, However, it doesn’t have enough steering precision or line adjustability compared with the very best of the opposition.

The all-wheel drive system means you can make the most of the performance all year round, in weather that would likely burn out the traction control light in the old rear-driven car. The interior looks distinctive when compared with the Audi S3, Mercedes-AMG A35 and Volkswagen Golf R, yet from the outside it doesn’t shout about its potential pace with vulgar spoilers or bonnet vents.

Where it previously stood out for having an outlandish powertrain, the fastest BMW 1 Series now differentiates itself with subtle styling, usability, and confidence inspiring handling. That statement will win it a place in the minds (if not the hearts) of many.

If accessible, under the radar performance is your thing then the BMW M135i is a stealthy alternative to the in-your-face Honda Civic Type R or Hyundai i30 N.

What we like

The interior quality is deeply impressive, the in-car technology is polished and effective, while the long-distance comfort makes it easy to live with. The security that comes with all weather all-wheel drive can’t be under-estimated, either.

What we don’t like

It’s not very entertaining, lacking in the communication you’d normally expect through the steering wheel from a BMW. The engine note also lacks soul, while rear passenger space is deficient compared with the Audi S3 and Honda Civic Type R.

The BMW M135i is fast, but lacks a little excitement compared with the best of its rivals.
