We expect the 3 Series Touring to achieve five stars when tested by Euro NCAP. Standard safety kit features six airbags, including twin front and side airbags and full-length head airbags in the front pillar. BMW 3 Series Touring safety levels are high partly thanks to standard-fit Dynamic Stability Control, which includes traction control.

Load space on the 3 Series Touring has improved by 35 litres to 495 litres when the seats are in place when compared to the previous generation. With the seats folded flat the load space expands to 1,500 litres.

This means that the 3 Series Touring is now bigger than its two main rivals: the Mercedes C-Class estate has a load space of 475 litres with the seats in place while the Audi A4 Avant has a load space of 490 litres. All models come with luggage securing lugs, a pair of coat hooks, a luggage net and strap and a deep storage compartment.

The rear seats have a 40:20:40 split allowing you to load skis or snow boards while four occupants travel in comfort. The tailgate is electrically powered and comes as standard kit. Tick the option box and you can open the boot with the motion of a strategically placed foot beneath the rear bumper – incredibly handy if your hands are full.
