"Weighted" mpg figures Explanation
Plug-in hybrid fuel economy explained
Official fuel economy tests give a so-called "weighted" mpg for plugin hybrids (PHEVs). This attempts to account for the fact they can be driven either under petrol/diesel power, or under electric power.
The current test and calculation is far from perfect however, giving eyebrow-raising figures as high as 250mpg. Such high figures will not be even remotely achievable for owners who regularly rely on their PHEV's petrol or diesel engine.
For now, Parkers advice is to use weighted mpg only to compare the relative economy of PHEVs rather than to compare a PHEV with a petrol or diesel car. Thinking of weighted mpg as mpg in the conventional sense is unlikely to be informative.

Safety ratings

Euro NCAP Rating – 5 stars

The BMW 5-Series Saloon was tested by Euro NCAP in 2017 and was awarded a 5 star overall rating. This overall rating is calculated from the following individual ratings:

5 star rating
Test 2017
Individual safety ratings
Adult Occupant: 91%
Child Occupant: 85%
Vulnerable Road Users: 81%
Safety Assist: 59%

Euro NCAP provides motoring consumers with a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of some of the most popular cars sold in Europe. The safety ratings are determined from a series of vehicle tests, designed and carried out by Euro NCAP. These tests represent, in a simplified way, important real life accident scenarios that could result in injured or killed car occupants or other road users.

*Where a range of mpp is shown the low figure relates to a version of this car fitted with all optional extras that reduce fuel economy; the high figure to a version fitted with no such options. A single figure indicates there are no options available that affect fuel economy. Based on WLTP combined fuel economy for versions of this car made since September 2017 only, and typical current fuel or electricity costs. Based on "Weighted" mpg; figures depend on the proportion of miles driven in pure electric mode and may vary widely.
