Thirsty engine, expensive tyres, steep insurance, BMW service rates. These all conspire to mean you'll not be running one cheaply, but its exclusivity means that used values are very strong, and if kept in good condition you won't lose very much money on one.
There were some reports of problems with the VANOS variable inlet system, but where this was a problem, it came to light pretty quickly and would have been resolved under warranty. Otherwise it appears to uphold the tradition for good reliability that is expected of the BMW brand.
