The SRX isn’t cheap to own, but has running costs that are similar to many other petrol-engined cars in this class. On the plus side, the market isn’t flooded with them, so a niche market for American cars, sensible list prices and a high specification help to keep values higher than they may otherwise be. With no diesel on offer, fuel consumption is an issue – the 3.6-litre is capable of 21mpg, while the 4.6-litre manages just 20mpg.

Both cars also fall into the highest group for road tax.

With a choice between a 3.6 V6 or 4.6 V8 petrol engine, it’s no surprise that the SRX gets a rock-bottom eco score. The smaller engine achieves 21mpg and emits 317g/km CO2, which although is about average for a large petrol 4×4, is exceptionally poor compared to the average family car. A Mondeo will typically emit about 180g/km CO2.

The SRX is something of an unknown. It feels sturdily built and has well proven (in the States at least) engines. But with limited sales in the UK, it’s difficult to gauge how the how the brand is performing. As a pointer, the SRX has performed better than average in US reliability surveys and has been on sale in the US since 2004.
