Our car advice section offers helpful articles such as what is a car warranty? But this one in particular details car manufacturer warranties in the UK and will help you understand what components are covered and what actions might void your warranty.

Are tyres covered under warranty?

One of the most common questions Google is asked when it comes to car warranties. The bad news is that tyres, by and large, are NOT covered by a standard warranty. Obviously, all warranty terms and conditions are different and so double check that tyres are not included.

However, generally, tyres will only be covered by law based on manufacturer defects. Ergo, if you’ve developed a flat tyre from a puncture or incident, the liability will fall to you for replacement, though you may be able to claim on your car insurance.

Is the timing belt covered under warranty?

Like tyres, a timing belt is not generally covered under warranty. You should always check your own warranty’s small print to verify the exclusions. However, a timing belt is considered a consumable. That is, it wears out with use and so replacement and labour to fit the replacement are chargeable.

5
Timing belt failures will usually see you stranded at the side of the road.

Rare occasions where a timing belt may be considered to be the manufacturer’s liability is under the Consumer Goods and Services Act, whereby the manufacturer has to supply a component fit-for-purpose. If the timing belt can be proved to be faulty or damaged, there may be a case for the manufacturer to repair or replace in line with the consumer’s statutory rights.

Is a fuel pump covered under warranty?

Arguably, a car warranty ought not to be necessary for the first 12 months of ownership, as consumer protection rights in the UK mean any fault which renders the vehicle not fit-for-purpose is covered by statute. In this time, car manufacturers have a legal obligation to put you in the position you would have been in but for the fault developing. That is to say, they ought to replace, repair or refund as appropriate.

Outside the initial year of ownership, your car insurance would cover you for any collision damage, but if a fault has developed, the argument is, a liability of costs shouldn’t be borne by the consumer.

Since insurance policies require an excess to be paid on any claims, and claims tend to result in higher renewal prices, it is fair for consumers to want assurances from the manufacturer that, in the event, a vehicle component falls short of expectation in the first five to ten years, the manufacturer bears the costs of replacement of the part, and if the warranty is sufficiently comprehensive, the labour to complete the work.
