Small deposit, big value: top value low-deposit finance deals

  • Find out what you can afford on finance with a £1,000 deposit
  • Budget choices available from less than £100 per month
  • Benefit from deposit contributions that can reach more than £10,000

Put down a big enough deposit and you can get any car within your monthly budget. The challenge with car finance is to make your budget stretch as far as possible with the deposit you’ve got.

While some manufacturers will hand over the keys without any upfront deposit, others will dictate that you put down a deposit of up to 50 percent of the car’s value to access the best deals.

If you can spare £1,000 for a deposit, however, you should be able to get yourself a great car for a low price – whether you choose to hand it back at the end of the contract or buy it outright. Find out how much you can afford to borrow with our car finance calculator.

£100/month – Fiat Panda

The Fiat Panda 1.2 69 Pop is by no means the cheapest car on the market at £9,510, but it is one of the least expensive you can get on finance. Helping to explain this is a whopping £2,515 saving on the list price and a contract which spreads costs over 48 months.

As a result, monthly payments stand at just £99. Choose to buy this at the end of the contract and despite steep 6.5 percent APR you’ll still have paid £1,435 less than the on-the-road price – a huge discount on such an inexpensive car.

£160/month – Alfa Romeo Mito

The Alfa Romeo Mito TwinAir 105 Progression may not be able to match the Panda’s huge list price saving, but funding it through Alfa’s PCP scheme could save you an even greater proportion if you buy the car at the end of the contract.

This is all thanks to a substantial £2,250 deposit contribution and interest-free credit – again spread over four years. Consequently, £159 per month (with a £999 deposit) can get you the keys to this nippy 105hp petrol model.

£200/month – Audi A3

If you fancy a posher badge on the bonnet, just a little extra each month could get you into a turbocharged petrol Audi A3. With the same 48-month term as the Panda and Mito plus a round £1,000 deposit, monthly payments stand at just over £200 – partly thanks to a £2,400 deposit contribution from Audi.

Interest charges are high, however, with APR weighing in at 6.7 percent. This means that if you buy the car at the end of the contract you’ll have paid £980 extra for the privilege of spreading costs over four years. The A3 is still undoubtedly a substantial amount of car for the money, though.

£250/month – Skoda Octavia

Up the budget to £250 per month and you can supersize the Audi A3 by opting for its much larger Skoda Octavia sibling. Not only do you get a more spacious car but you also gain a much more powerful 1.4-litre petrol motor, twice the mileage allowance plus a shorter 42-month contract – letting you change into a new car sooner, if you wish.

Monthly payments stand at £250, while zero-percent APR and a £1,000 Skoda deposit contribution mean that you will pay less than the list price should you buy the car when the contract ends.

£300/month – MINI Cooper SD 5dr

If you’d rather up the fun factor and don’t need the space of the Octavia, the Cooper SD could fit the bill. Performance from the 2.0-litre diesel engine is impressive, living up to the car’s fun handling while claimed fuel economy is just shy of 70mpg.

Even with a meagre £100 deposit this MINI sneaks under the £300 per month mark through the company’s three-year PCP scheme. Buy the car outright at the end of the scheme and it’s still a good value way to buy, as the £2,250 deposit contribution nearly covers all of the interest charged.

£400/month – SEAT Leon ST

Managing to mix the practicality of the Octavia above with the performance and economy of the MINI, is the SEAT Leon ST 2.0 TDI 184 FR DSG. With a potent diesel motor this Leon has more than enough muscle to live up to the sporty looks of FR trim, while the addition of a DSG automatic gearbox makes it a cinch to drive in town.

Throw in a £2,500 deposit contribution from SEAT and this estate proves good value monthly at £392, and if you choose to buy it outright when the contract ends, you'll have paid less than the list price.

With a deposit contribution from Ford of £500 and minimal 0.8 percent APR, Edge drivers who buy the car at the end of the finance term will have paid just £136 in interest.

£750/month – BMW 7 Series

Big cars don’t have to mean big costs, as this BMW proves. Despite costing twice as much as the great-value Ford above, the 730d M Sport is barely 40 percent more per month. This comes courtesy of interest-free credit and an enormous £8,997 deposit contribution from BMW.

As a result, potential 7 Series drivers need to pay just over £700 per month to put one of these giants on the drive, even with the small £1,000 deposit. With no interest added to monthly payments, those choosing to buy the car at the end of the contract will have paid nearly £9,000 less than the list price.
