‘Seamless’ Nissan subscription service explained

  • The easiest way to drive a Nissan
  • Allows you to change cars every three months
  • Not strictly the best long-term value

Nissan has become the latest car manufacturer to offer an all-in-one car payment solution. Nissan’s subscription service will allow consumers to pay for the cost of a car, insurance for up to five drivers, road tax, servicing and roadside assistance – virtually everything needed to run a car except for fuel or electricity – in one monthly payment.

How does Nissan’s subscription service work?

Everything is done simply online. Customers pick a car, a contract length and then a monthly mileage agreement. All they need to apply is a driver’s licence, signature and a payment card. The whole process takes minutes and is run in partnership with Bipi Mobility.

The length of the contract spans from three months to 24 months, while the mileage agreement ranges from 800 miles to 2,000 miles per month.

There’s no initial payment like with a traditional leasing deal, but a refundable deposit equivalent to one month’s payment is needed.

Once that’s all complete the car is then delivered to the customer at home on a date and time of their choosing.

What cars are available on Nissan’s subscription service?

So far there are only three cars on offer. And even then, consumers can only choose from one trim level and they don’t get to choose the colour.

You can subscribe to a Nissan Leaf, but trim level choices are limited at the moment.

How much does it cost?

Nissan subscription prices kick off at £645 per month for a Nissan Qashqai, £659 for a Nissan Leaf and £995 for the Nissan Ariya.*

What are the eligibility requirements?

Drivers need to:

  • Be between 25 and 70 years old
  • Have held a full UK/EU Driving Licence for at least two years
  • Be living in the UK and have been resident for at least two years
  • Not have been banned from driving within the last five years
  • Not have been refused motor insurance cover or have had a motor insurance policy declined or treated as void by a motor insurer
  • Not had more than two accidents within the last five years
  • Not had more than six penalty points on their driving licence in the last three years
  • Not be engaged in professional sport

Nissan subscription versus traditional leasing

Nissan subscription:*

Car: Nissan Qashqai e-Power N-Connecta

Mileage: 12,000 per year

Contract length: 24 months, rolling after that

Initial payment: £0

Monthly cost: £682.99

Cost for 24 months: £16,391.76

Typical lease deal including maintenance, but not insurance:*

Car: Nissan Qashqai e-Power N-Connecta

Mileage: 12,000 per year

Contract length: 24 months

Initial payment: £1,737.90

Monthly cost: £481.30

Maintenance cost: £44.70 per month

Cost for 24 months: £13,880.60

Total cost difference is more than £2,500 in favour of leasing. Once you take into account insurance, typically around £500 to £750 per year for a Qashqai, the lease deal still looks cheaper, although Nissan’s subscription model is more flexible.

For instance, it allows buyers to choose a three-month subscription, whereas most leasing companies will ask for a minimum contract length of 18 months.
