Kia’s new EV5 is gunning for the Tesla Model Y with a £39k starting price, 329 miles of range and family SUV practicality.

Kia has confirmed pricing and specifications for its latest electric family SUV, the EV5. Order books are now open ahead of first UK deliveries later in 2025. Prices start from £39,295 for the entry-level Air model, rising to £47,095 for the flagship GT-Line S. All Kia EV5s use an 81.4kWh battery with a WLTP driving range of up to 329 miles.

The EV5 will sit alongside the Sportage in Kia’s UK line-up, targeting one of the country’s most competitive segments: the mid-sized family SUV. With space for five, a 566-litre boot, a 44-litre front boot and up to 1,650 litres of total load space, Kia is promising the sort of practicality that buyers realluy need in this market.

Power comes from a single 214hp electric motor driving the front wheels. That’s enough for 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds and a 102mph top speed. Thanks to Kia’s 400V E-GMP fast-charging platform technology, a battery top-up from 10-to-80% takes just 30 minutes on a 150kW DC charger, or around seven hours on an 11kW home wallbox.

What models and trims are available?

As with Kia’s other new electric cars, the EV5 comes in three trims: Air, GT-Line and GT-Line S. Even the entry-level car includes LED lighting, heated front seats, a three-screen dashboard and advanced driver assistance systems. The mid-spec GT-Line adds larger alloys, sportier styling, powered seats and wireless phone charging, while the GT-Line S gains a sunroof, ventilated seats, Harman Kardon hi-fi and advanced parking tech.

Tech highlights include Kia’s latest ccNC infotainment, twin 12.3-inch displays, a 5.3-inch climate touchscreen and, on higher trims, a 12.3-inch head-up display. All models get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Plug & Charge, and Kia’s CarPay parking payment service. Entertainment packages are optional, unlocking streaming, games and video apps when the car is parked.

Notably, the EV5 is among the first models to feature Kia’s ChatGPT-powered AI Assistant, activated with ‘Hey Kia’. It can plan trips, explain vehicle functions and even provide entertainment – a sign of how quickly in-car tech is evolving.

What this means for you

If you’re in the market for a family SUV, the EV5 is aimed squarely at where most UK buyers spend their money. It’s pitched against the likes of the Skoda Enyaq, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Tesla Model Y, and Kia’s aggressive pricing looks designed to undercut premium rivals.

The driving range of up to 329 miles means it should handle long trips with confidence, while the 30-minute DC fast-charge window makes motorway top-ups less of a chore. With generous equipment and clear trim levels, buyers don’t need to wade through long options lists, keeping things simple.

Editor’s view: Is this the Tesla killer we’ve been waiting for?

This is looking very promising: Kia is on form right now, and it adds to the model range a big-hitting EV arriving in the UK at sensible money. Starting at just over £39k, the EV5 gives families a credible alternative to combustion SUVs without the stratospheric prices we’ve seen elsewhere.

The equipment lists are generous and, crucially, you’re not being asked to pay extra for the essentials. I also like Kia’s approach to trims: three easy choices, with very little to add. That’s buyer-friendly thinking.

Of course, the acid test will be real-world range and charging infrastructure, but on paper the EV5 looks like it could be the sweet spot of Kia’s electric range. If you’re looking to go electric without breaking the bank, this is one to keep on your shortlist.
