VW, Skoda and Cupra launch £1,500 electric car grant guarantee

Volkswagen Group brands VW, Skoda and Cupra have introduced a £1,500 Grant Guarantee on selected EVs, giving UK consumers certainty ahead of the Government’s impending Electric Car Grant.

Volkswagen Group has launched a £1,500 ‘Grant Guarantee’ across electric models from VW, Skoda and Cupra electric cars. The discount is guaranteed regardless of whether the Government’s yet‑to‑be‑confirmed Electric Car Grant ends up covering them.

The offer applies to selected Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4 models, Cupra Born variants and Skoda Enyaq and Elroq SUVs. Orders must be placed by 31 August 2025, with deliveries bearing the new ‘75’ plate from 1 September. It adds hugely to a rapidly-growing list of carmakers offering discounts on EVs.

It brings price certainty to buyers at a time when the Government’s latest EV support is unclear. For VW Group – already the largest player in the UK car market – it’s a strategically significant move that still positions it ahead of official policy delivery.

Volkswagen says all major trims of the ID.3 (above) and ID.4 (Pure, Pro, Pro S) are included. The brand reported a surge in EV interest following the Government announcement, and this guarantee aims to translate that into sales immediately.

Cupra’s £1,500 grant guarantee covers Born V1, V2 and V3 in 59 kWh, 77 kWh or 79 kWh battery formats. Marcus Gossen, Managing Director of Cupra UK, said: ‘We want to ensure EVs are accessible to as many people as possible… we’re allowing everybody to take advantage.’

Skoda’s version covers 11 variants of the Elroq and Enyaq (excluding the Coupé). Matthew Bowden, Skoda UK Brand Director, said the deal reflects the brand’s commitment to ‘delivering for our customers’.

All three brands specify that customers cannot claim both their Grant Guarantee and the Government’s Electric Car Grant. But in practice, the Volkswagen Group saving is locked in now, and acts independently from the final criteria on Government eligibility.

Volkswagen Group’s decision comes amid an unprecedented wave of EV discounting across the industry. Manufacturers have already slashed prices by around £4 billion in 2024 alone to meet zero‑emission mandates and attract buyers in a softening market.

This trend is also reflected in Parkers’ latest market‑trends coverage, which shows that heavy discounting is a key driver of EV uptake but also puts pressure on near‑new values and margins.

What this means for you

If you’re in the market for an EV, this £1,500 guarantee brings clarity when waiting for the Government’s scheme could leave you in limbo. It removes doubt over eligibility and locks in a discount now.

It applies across three major brands and a wide range of body types – from the compact Born to the practical Enyaq SUV – so you have genuine choice with assured savings.

This move marks another step in the broader trend of aggressive EV discounting, which is reshaping affordability and value in the UK new‑car market.

Editor’s view: the electric car price war goes mainstream

This is massive news. The Volkswagen Group is easily the largest player in the UK car market, and even though others acted faster, VW Group’s scale gives this move serious weight.

It’s smart because it guarantees £1,500 off whether or not your chosen EV ends up qualifying for the Government support. That’s particularly valuable when the rules are still being finalised.

For many buyers, price remains the decisive factor in choosing an EV. Now, with guaranteed discounts and tempting finance options on popular models, the choice to go electric in 2025 looks more attractive than ever.
