Most buyers will have chosen the 2.5 CRD which does a reasonable job of hauling the Voyager's two-tonne bulk around, but has an appallingly notchy gearchange, which almost feels like it's broken. The 2.8 CRD comes with a four-speed automatic transmission, is a little more powerful than the 2.5 CRD and is just as quick on the road. As well as the 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol model, the Voyager was originally available with a 175bhp 3.3-litre V6, which as smooth, but thirsty.

The 2.4 has the only petrol Voyager offered since late 2004. All four-cylinder models accelerate from 0-62mph in about 12 seconds and are capable of more than 110mph flat out.

Not a great handling car, even for a large people carrier, with vague steering and significant body roll. The front tyres also run out of grip occasionally in faster bends if you have to press on, so it's best driven in a more relaxed manner. The ride is fairly comfortable and makes travelling long distances in the car pretty easy on all the occupants.
