  • Large boot with folding seats
  • More luggage space up front
  • Adequate cabin storage

How much space is there?

As you’d expect from a car designed for Americans, the Mustang Mach-E has plenty of room up front. The seats are comfortable and accommodating, while elbow and knee room is abundant. There’s a big space under the huge infotainment screen with a wireless charger and additional open storage underneath. A large cubby is situated under the armrest, the latter only having two positions – up or down.

The door pockets could be a bit bigger, if we’re honest, but that might be down to space constraints due to the car’s floor being full of batteries. Those in the back are well served for room and there’s no transmission tunnel to rob footspace from the middle passenger. Tall people might find the elegantly shaped roofline eats into vertical inches, but otherwise the Mach-E is well-equipped for transporting five.

A panoramic sunroof is on offer too. This doesn’t cut that much into headroom and allows more light to seep in. We reckon it’s worth the additional money.

Boot space and storage

Despite that boxier SUV shape, it might surprise you to hear that the Mach-E’s 402-litre boot is actually slightly smaller than the petrol Ford Mustang, however, it’s much easier to access thanks to that high lifting hatchback, plus you can drop the seats to unlock 1,420 litres space.

It’s a really good-sized, usable space though, whichever way you look at it. A split floor offers a choice between a flat loadspace or a boost in luggage capacity, just bear in mind if you configure it for the latter there will be quite a large lip to lift things over.

The Americans call this a frunk, a portmanteau of front and trunk.

Don’t forget the lack of combustion engine up front too, and this means you get a further 81-litres of luggage space, which is good enough for an overnight bag or two at a push. Best of all it has a drainplug, so like the Ford Puma’s Megabox, you can store muddy sports kit in there and then just hose it out.

Our test car had a handy cable storage system installed in this space – that might be of more appeal to you if you regularly cart around charging wires. But if you have a wallbox with a tethered cable, you could probably do away with this and make better use of the extra capacity.

Is it easy to park?

The Mustang isn’t as tall and as wide as more regular-shaped SUVs, so it’s broadly pretty easy to park. All cars come with a 360-degree rear view camera, which is a bonus because rear visibility isn’t all that great.

All Mustangs also come with Ford’s latest park assist, which can parallel and perpendicular park for you.

Safety

  • Five-star Euro NCAP rating
  • Lots of active driver technology
  • Over-the-air updates too

The Mach-E is a safe car – it scored near maximum markers for driver and passenger safety in the official Euro NCAP score and did very well on protecting other road users, too. The suite of driver assistance technology is all present and correct for a contemporary electric car.

None of this is ground-breaking but you get all of the semi-autonomous options that make long-distance driving that little bit less stressful:

Plus, most excitingly, the Mach-E is capable of being updated over-the-air, so tweaks or additions to this list can be installed even after purchase.
