Verdict: is the Ford Puma (1997–2002) a good used car?

If you’re after a small, fun-to-drive coupé that still feels special today, the Ford Puma remains one of the best-value modern classics on the market. Its sharp handling, rev-happy engine and distinctive styling make it genuinely enjoyable to drive, and the 1.7-litre VCT version in particular offers a brilliant blend of performance and usability.

Not all examples are created equal, though. Rear arch and inner sill/floorpan rust is common – and often poorly repaired – while tired suspension and neglected servicing can dull what should be a razor-sharp driving experience. But find a good one, ideally with solid service history and original condition, and you’ll be rewarded with one of the most entertaining small Fords ever built.

The Puma’s compact size, low running costs and enthusiastic ownership community also make it a great starter classic – especially while prices remain reasonable. Just be sure to dodge the rusty, modified or mistreated cars and buy on condition rather than price.
