When the first Hyundai Coupe appeared in 1996, it was not the Korean manufacturer’s first attempt at a sporty model. Whereas this Coupe was based on the mid-sized Hyundai Lantra saloon, its smaller predecessor, the Scoupe (pronounced S coupe), shared its underpinnings with the smaller Pony range.

Featuring distinctively curvy bodywork, the Hyundai Coupe – called Tiburon in other parts of the world – was a front-wheel drive three-door coupe rivalling the likes of the Toyota Celica, Ford Cougar and Mazda MX-6.

Powered by a range of 1.6- and 2-litre petrol engines it wasn’t as fast as its looks suggested, although the F2 and F2 Evolution models, featuring spoilers used on the rally versions, at least looked the part.
