Parkers overall rating: 4.2 out of 5 4.2
  • Average-sized passenger space
  • At least the boot's large, though
  • Easy to park and manoeuvre

The interior of the i30 offers a similar amount of space as the Kia Ceed and Vauxhall Astra. It's roomy up front with an airy feel and lots of adjustment in the seats, while those in the rear aren't likely to be complaining about a lack of headroom.

Where they might struggle is if a taller person is sitting in the front, as legroom isn’t as generous as in the Ford Focus or Volkswagen Golf, for example. Like most of its rivals, a passenger in the middle rear seat will have to compete with other passengers for somewhere to put their feet. Still, there’s plenty of space to store bits and bobs with extra cubbies dotted throughout the cabin.

Does the i30 feel big to drive?

The i30 isn’t a large car, meaning it’s very easy to drive along tighter roads and to manoeuvre in town. There’s also plenty of glass and slender roof pillars, which really assists with visibility, especially in tighter spaces. Plus, there's a third side window to aid visibility.

Parking sensors are standard-fit on much of the range as well, while a parking camera is available higher up the range, which only helps things further. The awkwardly large turning circle on the sportier N models can make low speed manoeuvres just that little bit more cumbersome.

How big is the i30's boot?

The boot measures 395 litres with the rear seats up and 1,301 litres with them folded, which puts the i30 among the roomiest of cars of this type, trailing only the likes of the Skoda Octavia and its enormous cargo bay.

Unfortunately that back bench, which splits 60:40 for added flexibility, doesn’t fold completely flat, so loading large objects could be problematic.

How safe is the Hyundai i30?

  • Five-star Euro NCAP rating
  • Impressive array of kit
  • Two Isofix points in the rear

The Hyundai i30 Hatchback recevied a Euro NCAP rating of five stars in 2017, and it includes an impressive array of safety kit as standard. All models get lane-departure warning, a forward collision warning system, automatic emergency braking and hill-start assist.

As you move up the trims, LED headlights become available alongside an electric parking brake, front and rear parking sensors and a blindspot detection system. The rear outer seats feature Isofix childseat lashing points, front, side and curtain airbags, a tyre-pressure monitoring system and speed-sensitive automatic door locking.

Euro NCAP Rating – 5 stars

The Hyundai i30 Hatchback was tested by Euro NCAP in 2017 and was awarded a 5 star overall rating. This overall rating is calculated from the following individual ratings:

5 star rating
Test 2017
Individual safety ratings
Adult Occupant: 88%
Child Occupant: 84%
Vulnerable Road Users: 64%
Safety Assist: 68%

Euro NCAP provides motoring consumers with a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of some of the most popular cars sold in Europe. The safety ratings are determined from a series of vehicle tests, designed and carried out by Euro NCAP. These tests represent, in a simplified way, important real life accident scenarios that could result in injured or killed car occupants or other road users.
