What are the running costs?
The entry-level 42kWh battery offers 203 miles while the larger 49kWh battery can manage 229 miles according to the WLTP test cycle. We ran our 49kWh Inster down from 50% charge to zero as part of our testing and found it covered 93.6 miles and achieved a solid 4.4 miles per kWh (mpk) – so careful driving should yield 190 miles of range in the real world. This was conducted on a pleasant summer’s day mind, so expect it to fall to around 140 miles in the depths of winter. Â

All versions offer a maximum 120kW charge rate, which means a rapid charger can charge an Inster from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes. Hyundai also provides charging estimates for a 11kW home wallbox, measured from 10% to 90% battery capacity. The smaller battery would take three hours and twenty minutes while the larger 49kWh battery would require four hours.
The Inster is fitted with a heat pump as standard to aid efficiency. This feeds heat captured from the battery into the interior during cold months, helping keep the battery at the optimum temperature and reducing the need for energy-intensive fan-heaters.
The Inster also offers vehicle-to-load (V2L), which means the Inster can serve as a massive power bank, charging electronics, your home and even other EVs. For an extra £500 the Tech Pack includes a 16A three-pin plug at the base of the dashboard which makes it even more versatile.
Servicing and warranty
In a class where three-year warranties are as good as you’ll get, the five-year/unlimited-mile warranty offered by Hyundai is very impressive. The Renault 5 E-Tech is covered for 100,000 miles in its three-year warranty for the sake of comparison. The battery pack is covered by a separate eight-year/100,000-mile warranty and there’s also a 12-year rust perforation warranty too.
An interest-free and configurable servicing plan is available for the Inster, as well as fixed-price servicing once the car is out of warranty.
Reliability
- Hyundai has a reputation for reliability
- Dealers have a reputation for good service
- But it’s early days for the Inster
It’s too soon to say whether the Inster will be reliable, but judging it based on Hyundai’s previous offerings we can be fairly certain that the Inster will be a dependable form of transport. Hyundai’s other electric cars all have strong reputations for reliability which should offer some peace of mind.
