Should you buy one?

The F-Type does rather feel its age in places, and similarly-priced rivals from Porsche or Audi are a bit better to live with, not to mention more efficient and reliable. But cars at this end of the market are undeniably an emotional purchase, and the Jaguar’s noise, looks, heritage and the way it drives certainly stir the heart rather than the head.

For our money, a rear-wheel drive P450 is worth the cash – it’s hardly any less efficient than the entry-level four-cylinder car, but sounds so much better. Speed freaks, meanwhile, will find everything they’re looking for in the ballistic P575.

Of course, if you like the F-Type but would prefer a hard roof, the gorgeous F-Type Coupe is a great option.

What we like

We don’t care what side of the ‘style is subjective’ camp you fall into – the F-Type Convertible is a gorgeous car. Even a few years on from launch it looks stunning, and if you opt for one of the V8 cars it sounds even better. It also drives fabulously.

What we don’t like

The infotainment screen is old-fashioned and invisible in sunlight, and the interior and boot are tight for larger drivers.
