Land Rover Freelander (06-14) - rated 4 out of 5

Buoyed by the success of its Discovery models, and the long-standing Defender, Land Rover decided a new smaller 4X4 for the mass market was needed – and partner Rover would provide much of the bits.

And that’s partly why the first generation model, sharing engines with the MGF and other Rover models, was a bit of a disaster.

Sales started strongly, but warranty claims soon flooded into dealers almost as quickly as cars trickled out – from dodgy electrics, failed headgaskets (on the 1.8-litre K-Series petrol cars) and water leaks (especially on the three-door Freelander Softback and hardback) were infamous.
