Land Rover Freelander - Scottish trip

A long trip up to Scotland was the first full run for the Land Rover Freelander.

The boot was stuffed with luggage for three and a journey of 300 miles lay ahead for a trip to Edinburgh.

Given that the vast majority of the route was on long, straight dual carriageways the Freelander quickly settled into being a comfortable cruiser.  

Firstly, the captain’s chairs for the front passengers with the arm rest make settling in for the long haul really easy.

The cruise control can be worked from the multi-function steering wheel and is really simple to engage, set and switch off.

Given that we are at long last entering Spring (remember that yellow orb in the sky?), I can now say goodbye to two very useful features: heated seats and heated steering wheel.

On a cold frosty morning there’s nothing like having your back and bum warmed within a minute or so of driving off.

The heated steering wheel may seem frivolous but it saves me wearing gloves and I can safely grip the steering wheel without numbing my palms.

The other top touch for dealing with Mr Frosty is the electrically heated front windscreen as well as rear. Soon clears the frost and saves endless scraping and spraying of de-icer.

Other than that, all the rear seats in the Freelander are sumptuous, comfortable and roomy for four adults. I also like the fact that all the rear seats fold flat, making it easy to load larger items in the car.  

The improved touchscreen (for 2013 models) in the central screen is simple and intuitive to use and the sat nav is easy to follow, especially as you approach a roundabout or turning where a graphic appears to show which exit to head for.

The only downside is that the sat nav can be a bit slow to catch up with your position on the road. I can still find my way but it is a bit annoying.

The car also has voice control but there is a limited range of commands you can use - you’re not going to get into endless chit-chat with the car.

It is useful for making calls or using the sat nav, but some things have to be carried out by using the touchscreen, like re-connecting my mobile phone for instance.

Finally, the long run brought good news on the running costs front with over 35mpg seen on the car’s trip computer. All that sitting on the motorway improves fuel consumption no end and extends the tank range to over 400 miles.
