- Mercedes-Benz introduces second-generation CLA Coupe
- All-petrol engines at launch, diesels to follow
- European deliveries expected in May 2019
Looking for a new front-wheel drive Mercedes-Benz four-door, and the upcoming Mercedes-Benz A-Class Saloon not sleek enough? The German carmaker has you covered with the second-generation CLA Coupe, which is due to go on sale in May 2019.
The new CLA Coupe is a super-sleek-looking car, which has been highly streamlined to slip through the air, with a drag coefficient of just 0.23. Mercedes-Benz says, 'As a four-door coupe, the new CLA intrigues with its puristic, seductive design and sets new standards in the design DNA of sensual purity.' What we say is that it's a lot like the A-Class Saloon, but with a lower roofline and frameless side windows.
Mercedes-Benz says that it's longer, wider and more accommodating than the last CLA Coupe, and if the dynamic improvements from old to new A-Class Hatchback are mirrored with this car, it's also going to be a great deal better to drive.
Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupe: S-Class tech for the working man
Unsurprisingly, the new CLA Coupe gets the same industry-leading tech you get in the rest of the A-Class family, much of which was pioneered in the S-Class. Plus, it also comes with gesture-enhanced MBUX Interior Assist.
You get the same S-Class-emulating dashboard and interior, which currently places it at the top of the compact premium market. The feeling of interior space is assisted by the low-line dashboard, and the wide, landscape-format digital instrumentation.
The system is also able to distinguish between the driver's and front passenger's hand motions. Other functions can also be controlled in this way, including the interior lamp, which can be switched on and off by briefly extending a hand towards the rear-view mirror. If the driver reaches over towards the unoccupied front passenger seat in the dark, it will be illuminated automatically. This makes it easier to find any items which may have been deposited on the seat.
As with the rest of the cars in the Mercedes-Benz range, it's possible to access most of the extended features by simply saying, 'Hey Mercedes,' in the way you'd speak to an Amazon, Apple or Google assistant in the home.
How safe and what engines for the new Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupe?
The CLA Coupe boasts the very latest driving driver-assistance systems, such as the brilliant Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control system. The company says it offers the highest level of active safety features in this class.
At launch in Las Vegas, it's only available in CLA 250 Coupe form only, and receives Mercedes-Benz's four-cylinder petrol engine available in 225hp form. Mercedes-Benz says this will be followed by a a wider range of petrol, diesel and mild-hybrid options.
Like its A-Class cousin, the CLA Coupe will be automatic-only at launch, with the seven-speed DCT transmission being the sole option. Currently, Mercedes-Benz won't confirm what the exact model line-up will be for Europe and the UK, but expect it to mirror what's currently available on the new A-Class Saloon.
