Fuel economy

A more stringent standard for fuel economy (WLTP) was introduced from September 2017, and this model was not required to undergo that test. Its fuel economy measured under the previous test system was 19 - 21 mpg. However these figures are less likely to be achievable in real world driving and so should never be compared to another car's mpg which was measured under the newer, more realistic WLTP system.

Don’t expect the E-Class AMG to ever be cheap to run. Even if you’ve avoided the heaviest part of depreciation by buying second hand, you’ll still have to deal with woeful economy, group 20 insurance and the high cost of parts such as brake discs and tyres. Servicing at Mercedes dealers is renowned for being very expensive too.

Thanks to large V8 engines, the AMG is no friend of the environment. The E63 AMG emits a whopping 341g/km of CO2 and averages just 20mpg.

AMG engines are hand built and have a strong reputation for being incredibly powerful yet durable. Some early cars suffered from electrical problems but this was soon ironed out by Mercedes-Benz.
