Fuel economy

A more stringent standard for fuel economy (WLTP) was introduced from September 2017, and this model was not required to undergo that test. Its fuel economy measured under the previous test system was 36 mpg. However these figures are less likely to be achievable in real world driving and so should never be compared to another car's mpg which was measured under the newer, more realistic WLTP system.

One engine is available and it’s a high-powered, twin-turbocharged V6, so don’t expect particularly low running costs.

However, the new engine produces 17g/km less CO2 than the old one so sits in VED tax band I, and is up to 4.7mpg more efficient too. Expect up to 36mpg if you drive carefully.

There’s only one choice here in terms of powerplant at it emits 178g/km of CO2 on 18-inch alloy wheels – the only size in the line-up.

We can’t see there being many problems with the SLC, which is largely based on the SLK, and has many parts shared with other long-standing models. The engine in this model is new but is set to be used in many other Mercedes-AMG models so should be reliable.
