  • Twin rear doors hide decent boot
  • Still no patch on the best for rear-seat space
  • Plenty of storage cubbies up front

The Clubman is pitched as a more practical MINI, but it can’t step on the toes of the larger Countryman too much. How you perceive the space will then depend on where you’re coming from – step down from a Countryman and it will feel cramped, upgrade from a Hatch and it will feel palatial.

2019 MINI Clubman rear

The reality is somewhere in between, but the Clubman isn’t as practical as a more conventional competitor such as a Volkswagen Golf. For a start, the rear doors are quite small and the rear seats set quite far forward, so you may struggle to fit child seats in place – though Isofix mounts do help proceedings. Once in place, leg and head room is average, but the dark materials used across most of the range conspire to make it feel rather claustrophobic in the second row.

That’s not an issue faced by front seat passengers, who enjoy large, fairly comfortable seats with lots of adjustment. The extra width over the standard MINI Hatch can be keenly felt with lots of elbow room and a practical centre tunnel offering cupholders and additional storage. The Clubman’s upright windscreen also ensures it feels quite airy in the front.

Around back, the rear doors are a mixed blessing. They spring open with alacrity, which can be surprising if you’re not expecting it. Access is good when both can be opened – plus, it’s very easy to simply open one, rather than both doors to quickly sling in a shopping bag. But you’ll need to think carefully about where you park, as they require quite a lot of space to open. Reversing into a parking space could leave you stuck – a problem we don’t usually face in cars with conventional tailgates. The join between the doors also leaves a large blindspot in the middle of the rear view.

2019 MINI Clubman boot

As for the boot they reveal, it’s a slightly tight 360 litres with the rear seats in place and 1,250 litres with them folded. That’s 20 litres down in both dimensions on the Volkswagen Golf, though it’s not too far below its rivals by any means. A false floor can either be lowered to provide maximum boot space or raised to make a usefully-sized underfloor storage compartment.

Safety

The MINI Clubman scored four out of a possible five stars in Euro NCAP safety testing when it was assessed back in 2015 – not the top score. Though its 90% score in the Adult Occupant category was impressive, scores of 68%, 68% and 67% for child, pedestrian and safety equipment categories are less so.

All models do get autonomous emergency braking and an audible forward collision warning, plus an impressive 8 airbags in total.

Euro NCAP Rating – 4 stars

The MINI Clubman was tested by Euro NCAP in 2015 and was awarded a 4 star overall rating. This overall rating is calculated from the following individual ratings:

4 star rating
Test 2015
Individual safety ratings
Adult Occupant: 90%
Child Occupant: 68%
Vulnerable Road Users: 68%
Safety Assist: 67%

Euro NCAP provides motoring consumers with a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of some of the most popular cars sold in Europe. The safety ratings are determined from a series of vehicle tests, designed and carried out by Euro NCAP. These tests represent, in a simplified way, important real life accident scenarios that could result in injured or killed car occupants or other road users.
