How much space is there?

You sit high up in the Ariya – more so than in most rivals – yet there’s plentiful space up front and enough for a six footer to get comfortable in the back behind a similarly tall driver. It’s a bit more spacious than the Kia EV6 although the Skoda Enyaq has more rear head and legroom.

There’s no transmission tunnel (as is the case with most other electric cars) so you don’t have a space-sapping hump running through the interior. This means the floor is flat, ensuring there’s loads of room for passengers’ legs and feet.

Boot space and storage

At 466 litres the boot size is some way behind the likes of the Skoda Enyaq, which suggests that Nissan has priorised passenger room over luggage space. That said, it is larger than the Ford Mustang Mach-E, which measures in at 402-litres. We should also mention that boot space shrinks to 408 litres for all-wheel drive models.

Inside, the centre console is large and contains cup holders the perfect size for a bucket of coffee. Open this up and you’ll find a wireless charging pad. Storage bins up front are large enough for litre bottles, and there’s an electrically opening cubby under the centre vents, too. This feels slightly gimmicky, but is good for hiding valuables.

Is it easy to park?

The Ariya isn’t as large as some of its rivals such as the Enyaq and deceptively-styled Hyundai Ioniq 5. It’s 4,595mm long, 1,850mm wide and 1,660mm high – and that makes it only slightly bigger than the much cheaper Qashqai, and its welter of rivals.

The good news is that there are plenty of cameras to aid your efforts to get it parked, and forward visibility is excellent, even if you’re going to struggle with the view over your shoulder. Thank some exceptionally hefty rear screen pillars for that.

Safety

There’s a suite of driver assistance technology, including semi-autonomous adaptive cruise control, with lane-keeping assistance and Nissan’s Safety Shield active safety systems. the semi-autonomous driving tech works well on the motorway, although tighter bends require some steering input.

The entire Ariya model lineup is fitted with the entire suite of safety kit. So, in addition to the above, you also get automatic headlight dipping, traffic sign recognition, blind spot monitoring with cross traffic alert, front and rear automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning.
