As with many specialist, high-performance cars, the safety aspects of the Nissan GT-R are not tested by the Euro NCAP crash experts, but that’s not to suggest it’s an unsafe car.

On the contrary, with six airbags, tyre pressure monitoring and the security of four-wheel drive and a host of stability electronics, the GT-R’s both fast and safe.

No autonomous safety tech

While the lighting front and rear has been upgraded to full LED units, the GT-R’s age is showing through a lack of active technology such as lane-keeping assistance and autonomous emergency breaking.

Purists may argue that such devices detract from the purity of sports car driving, but given how much other tech is present on the Nissan, such functions are conspicuous by their absence.

As high performance cars go, the Nissan GT-R has to offer one of the greatest degrees of practicality, although being a two-door coupe it does miss out on a higher score by not having a tailgate or folding rear seats.

While many adults may find the sculpted pair of rear chairs comfortable, kids should be fine – if a little claustrophobic due to the aggressively sloping roofline and tiny side windows. Still, there’s more room in the back than most rivals – some of which don’t have back seats at all.

Until the revisions at the end of 2016, the Nissan’s automatic gearbox made it somewhat jerky to drive at lower speeds, especially trundling slowly in urban traffic or rolling to a near-stop at traffic lights.

Much of that has been engineered out for those 2017 model year revisions, but it doesn’t stop the GT-R feeling bulky, especially in the tight confines of a multi-storey car park – a reversing camera and parking sensors are your saviours here.

There’s 315 litres of space available in the GT-R’s boot but be aware that the loading lip is very high and the space on offer is deep rather than long.

Plenty of room for a couple of large, squishy overnight bags, certainly. The rear seats don’t fold down though – take something else to Ikea.
