Rolls-Royce Ghost Saloon - safety

Unsurprisingly Euro NCAP hasn’t tested a Rolls-Royce Ghost, as that experiment would be almost as expensive as crashing one into the Large Hadron Collider.

That said, the Ghost should be a very safe car, not least because it’s so vast, but also because it is built to a very high standard and features a host of advanced safety systems and design features to protect its occupants.

The Ghost’s steel monocoque body features side-impact beams in the front and rear doors, while progressive rear crumple zones are used to dissipate the energy generated in a rear-end crash.

Safety systems include multiple airbags, electronic stability control, cornering brake control, dynamic brake and traction control, anti-roll stabilisation and anti-lock brakes. The Rolls-Royce also features powerful brakes, which halt the car quickly and effectively.

The Ghost additionally uses an Advanced Crash and Safety Management system to observe multiple inputs and sensors, allowing it to judge which safety features to deploy – such as seatbelt pretensioners and airbags – in the event of an accident. This serves to further improve safety.

  • Seats for five but better with four
  • A substantial vehicle in all dimensions
  • Boot space is sufficient for your needs

Rolls-Royce Ghost Saloon - family

Given that you may want to use the car for long-distance business trips or executive meetings, you’d hope that Rolls-Royce Ghost practicality would be good.

Fortunately, it’s more than serviceable. Partly thanks to its size there’s a vast amount of interior space, with lots of leg- and head-room for both front and rear passengers. You’ll find plenty of storage space in the cabin, including multiple cup holders and good-sized door pockets.

In the rear there’s space for three adults to sit in comfort but it’s best to treat the Ghost as a four seater, as it feels a shame to make someone straddle the substantial transmission tunnel in such a luxury car.

Access to the rear seats is, however, excellent thanks to the rear-hinged coach doors that open up to 83 degrees, and close automatically at the push of a button. This makes it easy to enter and exit the rear of the Ghost.

Rolls-Royce Ghost Saloon - garage

The Ghost’s 13.4-metre turning circle and large dimensions can make both parking and manoeuvring difficult. This is further exacerbated if you’re driving the Rolls-Royce in a busy city centre or down tight side streets.

Be wary of cramped multi-storey car parks as well, because the ramps between levels can be particularly difficult to negotiate. It’s all too easy to end up wedged in an awkward spot, or unintentionally damage one of the large alloy wheels on aggressive kerbs.

Garage space shouldn’t be a concern though – if you can afford a Ghost, you can afford to build a suitable building to house it.

Rolls-Royce Ghost Saloon - luggage

The car’s boot space is a substantial 480 litres – about the same as the Bentley Flying Spur and marginally less than the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and more than enough to account for the vast majority of luggage requirements.

Both front doors feature integral umbrellas, a neat touch which means you don’t have to leave your own umbrella rolling around in the boot.
