  • More interior space than before
  • Comfy for four adults
  • Larger boot and more safety tech

How much space is there?

The Skoda Fabia has always felt roomy and an all-new platform (shared with the Volkswagen Polo and SEAT Ibiza) means the car is now 111mm longer and 48mm wider. There’s also an additional 94mm between the front and rear wheels, which is the crucial measurement here.

This gives those in the back more room for their legs and an easier time getting in and out. While front passenger space wasn’t an issue with the old car, the fact you don’t have to move your seat forwards as far to accommodate those in the back improves things all round. Four fit with ease, five is a push but not impossible.

Boot space and storage

The use of that interior space is more efficient too, with a noticeable bigger cubby under the dash, a space liberated by the cupholders being relocate further back by the handbrake.

Improving practicality further is an additional 50 litres of bootspace, taking the seats-up capacity to 380 litres – nearly on par with a larger Volkswagen Golf, which is very impressive. Drop the seats and that number grows to 1,190 litres.

There are also some neat practicality surprises to be found in the Simply Clever package – namely an umbrella pocket in the driver’s door, and a USB C outlet near the rear-view mirror to plug a dashcam into. An optional net retention system can be attached to stop items from flying around the boot when you’re driving, too.

Is it easy to park?

On the outside it still looks like a small car, with the size increase in all directions noticeable only when parked next to an older Fabia.

That stature combined with light steering and good visibility makes the Fabia very easy to park. You can also specify additional tech to help in this department, with all manner of sensors and a rear-view camera to spot hazards.

Safety

  • Five stars from Euro NCAP
  • New safety and driver tech added
  • Up to nine airbags can be specced

All cars get autonomous emergency braking that can spot pedestrians and a lane keep assistant, plus front side and head airbags and Isofix mounts in the rear outer and front passenger seats.

A range of new tech has found its way into the Fabia for the first time, and this can be found in the optional safety or driver assistance packs.

  • Travel Assist – adaptive cruise and lane keep
  • Park Assist – automatic parking system
  • Traffic Sign Recognition – spots speed limits for you
  • Side Assist – helps with pulling out of junctions
  • Manoeuvre Assist – keeps an eye on moving vehicles while you’re manoeuvring
