Prices for the 1.6 LXi may look tempting, but it’s best avoided unless you’re on an ultra-tight budget, as with 100bhp it’s underpowered and can struggle when it’s loaded up. The 125bhp 1.8 is quick enough, but the pick of the petrols is the 150bhp 1.8T. It’s quick, getting to 60mph in 8.1 seconds, is enjoyable to drive and has a top speed of 136mph.

The 1.9 TDI diesel makes for the higher mileage driver and is available with 110bhp or 130bhp.

Octavia is blessed with some of the best driving attributes from across the VW Group. It rides better than a Passat and handles as well as a Golf, although roadholding in the wet could be better. 1.8T buyers also get the option of four-wheel-drive. Unlike some 4×4 saloons, that offer few advantages over their 2WD counterparts, the Octavia has much-improved handling and at around £1000 more than the standard car, it’s worth looking at if you’re a more enthusiastic driver.
