The Subaru Legacy has been on sale since 1989, but we only saw it in the UK from 1990. It began life as a five-door estate or a four-door saloon body style with front-wheel drive (FWD) and the option of full-time all-wheel drive (AWD) system.
In 1993 the second generation was launched, and this also introduced the Subaru Outback model with AWD and air suspension.
Then, in 1998 the third generation was launched and remained on sale until 2003. This one used a range of flat-four (horizontally opposed) engines with either natural aspiration or turbocharging.
In 2003 we saw the introduction of two models – the Subaru Legacy Saloon and the Subaru Legacy Sports Tourer. These were models famed for their build quality and off-road ability, because by this point Subaru was known for its all-wheel drive system (thanks to the Impreza World Rally Championship efforts from the likes of Colin McRae).
