The Legacy Sports Tourer hasn’t been crash tested by Euro NCAP yet but the previous generation Outback (which is effectively an off road version of the Legacy) was awarded four stars for adult safety and this car should perform as good if not better. In addition to the surefooted handling, the Legacy offers all the usual safety equipment including six airbags.

Security equipment ticks the usual boxes too with remote central locking and a Thatcham approved alarm and immobiliser. The 3.0R Spec B models with automatic gearboxes also get an electronic stability control system.

The Sport Tourer is much more practical than its saloon sibling, not only is there an estate boot, but the rear seatbacks also fold down with a 60/40 split. The standard boot space is 459 litres – pretty much identical to a BMW 3-Series Touring while overall carrying capacity (with the seats folded flat) is 1,385 litres. There’s good stowage up front with twin cupholders, decent door pockets and a deep cubby box between the front seats.
