This version of the Outback hasn’t been crash tested by Euro NCAP yet but the previous generation was awarded four stars for adult safety and this newer model should perform as good if not better. In addition to the surefooted handling, the Outback offers all the usual safety equipment including six airbags. Security equipment ticks the usual boxes too with remote central locking and a Thatcham approved alarm and immobiliser.

The 3.0R Spec B and diesels models get an electronic stability control system.

The Outback has identical boot space to the Legacy Sports Tourer on which it is based. There’s 459 litres of luggage room with the rear seats in place which seems quite small, but they split and fold 60/40 to boost space to 1,628 litres overall – that’s more than a Volvo XC70. Its raised ground clearance and four-wheel drive make it an ideal workhorse for those living in rural areas and it’s also ideal for towing.

The 2.0-litre diesel can pull 1,700kg (braked) while the 3.0-litre is capable of towing trailers up to 2,000kg. Revised models from 2007 have a reversible cargo floor allowing the choice between carpet or a hard waterproof floor.
